Victory! Maui County passes comprehensive single-use plastics ban.
On April 21, 2020, Maui County adopted Bill 52 to ban single-use plastic foodware. The bill takes effect January 1, 2022 and bans the sale or use of disposable plastic:
- To-go containers
- Plates and bowls
- Cups (hot and cold)
- Cup lids
- Straws
- Stirrers
- Utensils (forks, knives, spoons)
In place of single-use plastics, Bill 52 requires businesses to utilize paper or certified compostable products. Bill 52 also builds on Maui County's current bans on single-use plastic bags and polystyrene foam to-go containers. In doing so, this is another important step towards reducing dependence on fossil fuels for disposable goods and encouraging positive business practices.
